Day 10 - Finding Your Mirrors

Trusting your gut is always something very special that we sometimes take for granted. When we meet people and shake their hands, we can often feel energy from that person. We feel safe and like we trust them -or- we don't feel that safety and belonging. This even happens on an energetic level from people we admire or “follow". Making human connections, in person and online, is extremely important and impacts our inner voice.

It starts with recognizing our inspirations or our “mirrors”: the people who help reflect our values and help us discover different parts of ourselves. Three of my inspirations are first, my friends, second, Amy Winehouse and third, Don Miguel Ruiz. This may be a strange collection of people but all of these people to me represent being vulnerable to change and being open to communicating with the deepest parts and the brights parts of our human experience.

  1. My friends are a huge part of my energy circle. Our conversations are always founded in creativity, honesty, encouragement, and most importantly love.

  2. Amy Winehouse. I have always admired her music and the way she writes her lyrics. They’re full of raw emotion which is so beautiful to witness and has inspired me as an artist myself and as a human to connect with those emotions that sometimes scare us and that society has deemed as ‘imperfect’ or ‘incomplete’. Which is not true.

  3. Don Miguel Ruiz is an author. I highly encourage you to read his book “The Four Agreements”. He writes in a way that speaks directly to my soul and the book has truly changed my life for the better.

Anytime I work with people who are eager to express themselves and ready to dig into the hard emotional work, it inspires me to mirror that back and recognize whatever I feel at the moment to be true, real and raw. This vulnerability helps me identify my values and the roots of my inner voice.

Exercises & Journal Prompts

  • A simple thing we can do is check-in with ourselves after being in a social situation with other people that we’re interested in having in our tribe. Ask yourself the following questions:

    • Do I feel a sense of belonging and acceptance around them?

    • What feelings or thoughts come up after I spend time with these people?

    • Do I feel like I want to be there for them as well?

      • Remember, just because you don’t feel extremely connected to some people doesn’t mean we burn the bridge and forfeit having any kind of relationship. Extending kindness and respect to everyone regardless helps color the world in a beautiful way.

  • Think of 3 of your favorite humans in your life.

    • How does your reflection look when you see them? Meaning, how do you see yourself through their eyes?

    • Example: "I picture myself…completely vulnerable. As if it were a younger me. Because younger me could even be me yesterday.”

  • Think of 3 of your favorite humans that you admire.

    • What do they represent to you?

    • What values do all of these people help you recognize in yourself?

    • What are the 3 values that are most important to your inner voice?
