Summer is HERE and we cannot wait to spend our time frolicking though Central Park! However, heading into these sunny months, we want to emphasize how important sun protection is for your health! It is just as important as eating well and exercising! Check out the following eye opening info and helpful tips on how to stay safe in the sun.
Heat exhaustion is a very common side effect from being in the sun too long. This is a result of your body losing too much water to cool itself down! Heat exhaustion can lead to headaches, lethargic behaviour, nausea and/or muscle weakness. Be sure to stay hydrated. At least 6-8 cups of water per day.
Tip #1: Always carry a water bottle! Come prepared and refill your bottle throughout the day. No need to waste money on plastic bottles. HUGE BONUS: reusable water bottles are super environmentally friendly!
Too much sun can lead to early aging, skin damage, discolouration and wrinkles! Wrinkles are formed when skin gets thinner, dryer and less elastic (can happen from sun overexposure). Once sun spots begin to present themselves, you can expect then to continually grow darker and larger.
Tip #2: Wear a hat!!! (We love this one, can you tell? #BEforBroadway) Hats prevent direct contact with UV rays, protect your eyes, and give shade to your face (which is the most exposed area of skin). BONUS: Hats are cute! If you’re on the hunt for a summer hat… well, we have one for you.

**Up top we have our pals, Cody Reynard, Chris Rice, Brittany Conigatti, and Lauren Boyd showing us what pre-show sun protection is allllll about!**
90% of Melanoma’s and skin cancers are related to extreme UV rays from the sun. The high energy from UV radiation can cause damage to our cells’ chromosomes. This can lead to uncontrolled cell division, and mass production of cells creating a tumour. Just 1 severe sunburn in your childhood or 5 sunburns over the course of a persons life, doubles the chances of developing skin cancer. (yikes, pass the sunscreen!!!!)
Tip #3: Everyday before you leave the house, be sure to apply your sunscreen! SPF 30 or higher is what is recommended. If you are planning to be outside for more than a few hours – remember to reapply! (do we sound like mom yet? She knows what she is talking about) Another helpful idea is to purchase a face moisturizer with SPF in it. BONUS: You’ll be covered for the days that you forget to apply your sunscreen.
We love enjoying the beautiful weather and we want you to do the same. This year, be sure to follow our tips and stay safe!
Happy Sunny-day, FFB Friends!
