5 Tips for Staying Positive during Audition Season

When I first moved to New York, I threw myself wholeheartedly into the wonderful world of auditioning. I quickly realized the amount of positive power required to endure the ups and downs with grace & total trust in the entire process! I've also realized over the years, you can never have enough tricks up your sleeve to keep the positive vibes flowing during audition season (or any season for that matter!) If you're aiming to fly out of every audition in a Glinda glow bubble, here are a few ways I've learned to stay positive!

1. Channel Positive Energy

It took me a long time to take ownership of my energy and it’s the greatest lesson I’ve ever learned! For most of high school and college, I rode the wave of energy that came my way, negative or positive. Coming across examples of each extreme, I realized that those people made a conscious effort to stay in their energy zone, negative or positive, totally unaffected by those around them. That is powerful! If you can discover your secret to constantly hum in that happy place of good vibes, you can approach every situation in a way that fosters growth and clarity.

2. Connect

One of the best way to keep positive during the rollercoaster of audition season is by connecting with people who make you feel awesome. It’s easy to go through audition season with tunnel vision until you see snow on the ground again but make sure the grind doesn't isolate you. Grab your smoothie partner and giggle over some greens so you can r-e-l-a-x and recharge

3. Reset

Sometimes you’re riding the rainbow out of a successful audition and other times you’re free fallin’ into a black hole of frustration and heartache. Remember you can always allow yourself a second to reset, whether it’s a cheap weekend trip away to clear your head, a day of endless wandering in a new neighborhood, or simply an hour in the park to mediate and sink your feet in the grass. Never underestimate those moments you take to yourself to clear your emotions and thoughts to make space for new energy and a new approach.

4. Learn

If you find you’re making the same mistake over and over again or getting the same results, it might be time to switcharoo your method of learning. Find a new voice coach, drop into a new acting workshop, or try a new dance class. Oh!, The many languages of learning!! Sometimes all it takes is finding someone new who can guide you in a way that you understand. The fear of change is real, I get it… you’ve been with your voice coach for a decade, there’s no way you could leave. Welp, the fear of not moving forward should rattle your cage enough to branch out and discover uncharted territory!

5. Create a Ritual

For those of you who need a serious plan of action like me, create a ritual that helps ground you and keep you in your happy zone every single day, specifically the time surrounding your auditions. My personal favorite is scheduling some happy time after auditions. Happy is different for everyone but one way to ensure a solid dose of endorphins and stress release is a fun workout. I swear, workouts are my go-to therapy and post-audition is the perfect time to clear your head and reset your energy. That way, no matter the outcome of the audition, you are training your mind, body, & spirit to be in a positive place post-audition which will keep you sailing calmly on the sea of auditions!
