#FFB: Brennyn Lark

Some of my first interactions with people I feature on Fit for Broadway are through social media which usually makes me feel like we're friends way before we actually meet. :) This was the case with Brennyn but spending time with her gave me such deeper insight into her fierce beauty, inside & out! Brennyn is a true example of someone who is following her own path and tuning into her own needs and dreams. I couldn't be more inspired by her example that balance and grounding come from within! Brennyn's approach to life is all about authenticity and inner truth which is the best way to live Fit for Broadway!

INTERVIEW:

Q: Brennyn!! We have been talking about getting you on the blog forever and today’s the day! When I started following you on Instagram, I kept thinking I have to get this fierce Les Miz beauty on FFB asap! What was your journey like to the wonderful world of Broadway?

A: Jane! It is such a pleasure and honor to have the chance to join forces with you. Thanks again for having me. My journey is still being unfolded, but I guess it started with me always knowing that my purpose in life was to sing! So with that being said at a young age I started doing community theater, children’s theater, talent shows, school shows then eventually tours and regional theater. I then wanted to further train so I went to AMDA, met my agent through a panel night, and then ended up getting sent on an appointment for Les Miz. The rest is history I suppose!

Q: I loved hearing that above anything, meditation is your secret tool for staying grounded and centered for performance each night. How did you get into meditation and what’s your daily practice like?

A: I got into mediation because my Godmother introduced me to the practice of the Law Of Attraction and manifestation. I began reading books, but realized to get closer to all of these practices I wanted to clear my mind. The best way to do so is through meditation. I believe mental health is just as important as physical. And sometimes we just need to tell our thoughts to shut up! So I try to keep it consistent. Even if I just focus on my breath for a solid 5 mins, that’s still mediation. Sometimes I’ll do a guided meditation where someone is walking me through it or i’ll focus on a word in San Skrit like Aham Bramasmi which means “I am the universe”

Q: You mentioned you also sing pop! How do you keep your voice healthy?

A: I do sing pop! Aside from Broadway, I am in the process of recording my own material (which I Snapchat about way too much…@BrennynL …shameless plug). Anyway! To keep my voice healthy I just listen to it. Haha! My voice will let me know when she's tired or if she needs a break so I listen to her. Vocal rest is great, a ton of water, copious amours of fruit, and a vocal steamer!

Q: Mediation has become a huge part of my life in the last few months. Any advice for readers who are interested in mediation but don’t know where to start?

A: My advice would be just start small. As I said, just see if you can focus on your breath for 5 mins.Thoughts will come, don’t get frustrated, just acknowledge them and then let them pass. Chances are that thought is actually coming to you for a reason. Namaste!

Q: Top 3 revelations you’ve discovered about the lifestyle of a Broadway performer.

A: 3 Revelations...

  1. Monday is the day to never get of bed or get out of your pjs.

  2. Coconut water or green juice or regular water is the drink of choice.

  3. Say goodbye to partying on the weekends with 5 shows ahead of you!

Q: Can you describe your weekly workout routine and how fitness effects your performance?

A: Ok, so my working out is actually pretty sporadic. I can go weeks without going to the gym, or I can go for weeks at a time. Depends on how i’m feeling. Running is always beneficial when it comes to breathing of course. I definitely find that I have a lot more stamina during singing when I have gone for a run. Also, stretching is so important keeping everything limber. The last thing you want is to be tense on stage!

Q: Let’s chat food. (I know you love pizza!) Can we play, What I Ate Yesterday?

A: What I Ate Yesterday...

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal with Almond milk

  • Lunch: Chopped salad with grilled chicken, cucumber, broccoli, topped with Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing

  • Dinner: Salmon and brown rice

  • Snacks: Coconut chips, Almonds, roasted seaweed

  • Miscellaneous: Green juice, green tea, CUPCAKE!

Q: Who or what inspires you?

A: My mom. She is the epitome of class, intelligence, strength, and beauty! Love that woman!!!

Q: Finish the phrase…

A: The best part about being on Broadway is…Touching people who I have never met before and making true connections with strangers

The biggest challenge of being on Broadway is… 8 shows a week, it can be tough to keep the show consistent every performance. And performing no matter what is going on in your personal life.

Q: What is your advice for aspiring performers who want a career on Broadway?

A: Have more belief in yourself than anyone else. If you don’t have faith in your talents how do you expect anyone else to? “What you seek you already are.”
